Guest Lecture at the Futurewell Research Group, Istanbul

On 13th March, 2025, Zeynep Yildiz, Anna-Lena Meiners and Nicolas Walter were the guests of the “Social Design Studio” Course by the Futurewell Research Group from Koc University, Istanbul, Turkey. As part of the lecture on the accessibility of arts and culture institutions, they talked about their projects on museum accessibility with Natural History Museum and ZKM in Karlsruhe, presenting their research process and initial results.

Talk on Campus Accessibility

In this talk, Dr. Zeynep Yildiz, a postdoc researcher from HCI&Accessibility Research Group, will present the initial findings of a research project that aims to understand the studentship experiences of disabled students at KIT. This research specifically questions how disabled students (not) use technologies to navigate higher education and how this affects their studentship experience. The event will take place on 26th of March from 2:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. in 50.28 Room 201.

Talk & Play: Breaking Barriers

We are looking forward to participate in the Talk & Play event at ZKM | Centre for Art and Media on 04th February, 2025. Kathrin Gerling and Anna-Lena Meiners will give a short intro to self-determined gaming experiences, and discuss accessibility in games with developers and game enthusiasts. More information.

Human-Robot Interaction 2025 Publication

We are pleased to announce that our submission, "A Socially Mediating Robot to Assist Non-verbal Children in an Inclusive Daycare Context," has been accepted as an LBR at HRI 2025. The conference will take place in March in Melbourne, Australia. The contribution describes a novel approach to how a social robot can be used to support non-verbal children in the daily life of an inclusive daycare.

The second workshop for KATE PhD students took place from October 28-29, 2024 at the Forstliches Bildungszentrum (FBZ) in Karlsruhe. The PhD students organized the workshop themselves. They presented their work with posters and lectures, exchanged ideas, networked and received training from Dr. Thorsten Schwarz on how to make PDFs accessible.

In October, schoolgirls were able to design their own environments with Unity VR and test them live. They also had the opportunity to learn Braille, create tactile graphics on the computer and print them.

People with visual impairments can navigate safely with the assistance of advanced guidance systems. However, obstacles such as parked bicycles, e-scooters, or vehicles often pose challenges on campus. Informational tags can be requested at info@access.kit.edu or printed for us.

Science Communication: Talk on Neurodivergence and Work

As part of the annual Meta Rhein Main Chaos Days of the CCC Darmstadt e.V., Sabrina Burtscher presented an update on her work regarding neurodivergence, work, and technology. Conference attendees from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands were present in the audience. The recording of the talk and the slides are available online.

Publication at CHIWORK 2024

 

We are pleased to announce that our submission "Neurodivergence and Work in Human-Computer Interaction: Mapping the Research Landscape" has been accepted and will be published at the CHIWORK Conference 2024. We will present it at the end of June in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK). The paper describes a literature review in the field of neurodivergence and technology in the context of work.

Workshop on creating accessible documents for school, university and work

From April 26-27, the 6th workshop on "Creating accessible documents for school, university and work" took place at InformatiKOM 2 at KIT. 65 persons from schools, transfer centers, pedagogy, universities and public administration from whole Germany took part in the workshop. It was organized by the Center for Digital Accessibility and Assistive Technologies together with the Chair of Pedagogy for People with Visual Impairments and Blindness at the University of Hamburg.
