Toxicity, hate, and harassment are increasingly problematic and widespread in online multiplayer games, e.g., with reports suggesting that 83% of Americans experience harassment in games. These behaviours have a multitude of negative effects on platform providers (e.g., increased churn) and users (e.g., causing distress). In this talk, Julian Frommel will provide an overview of this topic and challenges that we need to overcome to combat toxicity, hate, and harassment in online games. Then, he provides an overview his work providing a better understanding of game-based toxicity and contributing to preventing toxicity and mitigating harm with the overall goal of ensuring that online spaces stay safe and inclusive.
Julian Frommel is an assistant professor in Interaction/Multimedia at Utrecht University. He holds a doctorate degree (Dr. Rer.-Nat.) in computer science from Ulm University. His research in human-computer interaction and human-centered AI investigates the benefits and harms of interactive systems. He is interested in the design and implementation of interactive digital systems that provide enjoyable, meaningful, safe, and healthy experiences for users, including research on how to mitigate negative effects of toxicity and harassment in online spaces.
